Building the Maori Tech & Investment Community

The Māori tech and investment community is newly emergent and has the potential to make a significant contribution to the wider Māori economy.

Today there are few industries and sectors who will not be impacted by the current pace of technology change. Māori tech faces less hurdles as start-ups than traditional asset-heavy or primary sector industries. We increase our potential by collaborating together to learn and grow. Our culture and values provides a compelling base for shared purpose and whanaungatanga.

Māori tech includes those companies and organisations:

  • who are owned by a Māori entity or have a Māori legal structure

  • have governors, founders or entrepreneurs whom are Māori

  • produce a clear Māori product or service; or

  • is an organisation that makes a contribution to growing the Māori economy

Connection is our focus.

"As a tech venturing ecosystem built on a collaborative network, strong connections provide the foundation for our business."

— Barry Soutar

Maori Tech Economy, The Benefits

  • Asset Class - Māori tech is an emergent asset class. Māori can lead collaboration and collectivisation for scale. And together help connect good tech opportunities to investment.

  • Industry – We can help act as a focal point for mainstream investing in indigenous, diversity and regional outcomes. We understand how to deliver to Māori/Iwi needs in the tech space.

  • Events – We look to harness the power of collective collaboration. Our events calendar include at different times, Accelerated Product Activations (Hackathons), Missions to Market,  and a likely Annual Conference. We are focused on how to powering up Māori/Iwi participation in the tech sector.

  • Political – We intend helping represent Māori aspirations and needs on tech with the Treaty Partner.

  • PR/Stakeholder Management – We are building profile in order to help lead transformational change. We hope to champion the Māori Tech Asset Class.

  • Research/Data – We will co-design witrh our community and leverage research projects to inform the sector. We will maintain a repository for data and insights captured in the market for our collective benefit.
